About WoW Forever Name Generator

The generator draws first names and surnames for World of Warcraft: Forever, and checks a pair against the naming rules before you spend an evening on a character you will not be allowed to create.

Why This Site Exists

I am the sort of reader who takes the setting more seriously than the story. Races, languages, the reason one name is spelled a certain way and not another: that is the part of a made-up world I keep coming back to, and it is where this project started.

My roommate played for four years. I never raided. What I did instead was ask him questions, usually about where a people’s names came from and which parts of the setting were written down rather than merely implied. The names that came back had something random syllables do not: they sounded as though they already belonged to someone.

The generator is my attempt to make names that sound like that.

How the Names Are Made

Every race has its own syllable library: the pieces a first name is built from, and the prefixes and endings a surname is built from. A blood elf first name is assembled from blood elf pieces, and a blood elf surname from blood elf prefixes and endings.

Tone works on the surname. Under the default lore tone a surname comes from that race’s own prefixes and endings; noble, grim and wild each bring a separate vocabulary of roots into the draw. The first name stays with the race and gender you chose, except under Whimsical, where both halves go to the joke pool.

The generator also skips a short list of well-known character names. Beyond that list it promises nothing about the game: the checker reads structure and known patterns, and it does not query the realm for what is already taken.

The rules and where each one comes from live on the rules page → One copy is enough; two would drift apart.

Where It Stops

This is one person, writing in spare evenings. There is no team behind it, and the only way to reach me is the address below.

The site is free, with no account and no advertising, and it is a fan project: not affiliated with Blizzard Entertainment and not endorsed by them. The names, the rules and what happens in the game are their call.

If something here is wrong, or a rule has changed since I wrote it, write to hello@forevernamegenerator.com.
